I'm really rooting for him, I know we're starting to get "leaks" which all seems to be going for crazy top-tier wants and flashy-unexpected newcomers and ignoring actual all-stars like Toad and Isabelle who legitimately don't have a reason to not be in the game at this point, but there's so much going for Toad this time that I high hopes. With the Super Mario series celebrating its 35th anniversary, Nintendo has been particularly nostalgic, announcing Super Mario 3D All-Stars, as well as other Super Mario-related announcements and merchandise to help ring in the major milestone for its flagship franchise. Yeah, most people think that Captain Toad will obviously be the one in just because he has his own game under that moniker, but he was Toad first and he's more well-known as Toad, and using Toad with Captain Toad as an alt costume set allows you to pull from so much of his history in all the Mario games rather than just limiting him to his CT persona and making that central to his character in Smash (which isn't unwarranted or undeserved, but it pushes the "CT can't jump!" thought forward and that really needs to preferably be sidestepped entirely). Just having Toad or just having Captain Toad does a disservice to the character considering he represents both one of the most relevant Nintendo All-Stars not currently in the game as well as one of the most well-known races in video gaming. More Toads, the better!īest-case scenario to me would be getting Toad as the default, with the 5 different-colored toads a the alts (red/blueyellow/green/purple), and then Toadette and Toadsworth, and then Captain Toad as an alt costume set (with the 5 different-color toads representing the rest of the Toad Brigade), with "Captain Toadette" (in reality Archivist Toadette, but whatever for sake of simplicity), and "Captain Toadsworth" (which isn't a thing but I actually really kinda want it to be). ![]() I do still want my classic SMB2/SM3DW battle featuring the four heroes of Mario, Luigi, Peach and Toad tbh (or the 8 player match featuring the Mario Big 8 if this mode returns ).Īlso Toadette alts (ala Robin/Corrin/Villager/WFT) are something I fully expect at this rate too. Toads have been on a rise in importance in recent titles and it seems.wrong to not have a representative for everything Toad-esque in the series as of yet (literally a walking embodiment of the Mario logo - the mushroom!). It's true, some view him as nothing more than a generic NPC or even boring as a character - but I still do believe our lovable fungi has a chance this time around (most of his big competition is now in the game already, it's just a matter of Sakurai noticing him). But as Pacack mentioned, Toad has a very good resume now even compared to the past - especially via Captain Toad being a relatively charming character that many are quite fond of as opposed to the whole generic issue Toad had over recent years.Įvery character has their flaws, and while I too feel Toad is overdue for Smash - hopefully Sakurai changes his view on Toad. He had it rough during the pre-Brawl days, but I'm glad to see the Toads getting more active roles in the series since the Wii era.Īs someone who grew up with seeing Toad in active roles like SMB2, Wario's Woods and being heavily featured alongside the other 7 major Mario characters in various media and spinoffs - it was a delight to finally see Toad being playable in the platformers again as well as Captain Toad's own game announcement. It's a tough case being a Toad fan, personally have been awaiting for Toad's chance of being playable since the Melee days. Based off his appearances and stats in games like Super Mario Bros 2, Super Mario 3D World, and the other times he's had starring roles (purposely not counting Captain Toad, who I consider to be a separate character entirely), I'd see Toad as a hardcore glass cannon, being both fast and hitting like a tank (like Captain Falcon), but at the same time, he's a lightweight who has poor jumping height and an abysmal recovery basically, he can end you fast, but you can end him just as fast. ![]() Toad certiantly does have moveset potential, though. ![]() well, I don't care one way or the other, no skin off my bones either way). (Not that I don't want Toad to not appear. He's like Bandana Dee, in that he's continually become more popular over time and has gained a pretty big role in his respective series, so as much as I want some different Mario characters to appear, if you broke my fingers and made me say which Mario character would be the most likely to get into the new Smash, I'd say Toad. ![]() Yeah, Toad's chances are actually pretty good all things considered.
